ADULT ED GROUPS

Sunday Morning Classes (9:15 – 10:15)

Keeping Room Class – Does God really speak to people today?  Do you ever hear a message from God?   Did the prophets, kings and judges in the Bible really hear God’s voice? Are there prophets today? How can we be sure? What are prophets anyway?  Join us in the Keeping Room for a study of some of the prophets in the Old Testament and explore a Contemporary Message from the Past – justice, consumerism, forgiveness, idol worship, etc.
Leaders:  various class members

Parenting Sunday School Class –Love is the foundation for a child to be secure and to grow into a giving, loving adult.  Every child has a primary love language, a way in which he or she understands a parent’s love best.  Join this class as we learn about the five love languages of children and how we can recognize and speak our children’s primary love language.  This class meets in the library of the Presbytery office.
Leader:  Ken Clayton  987-1034

The “Other” Sunday School Class – Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and life abundantly.” (John 10:10)  Is this “abundant life” the same thing as “the good life” being marketed to us throughout our western society?  This fall the class meeting in the conference room of Presbytery will study the book Simpler Living, Compassionate Life: A Christian Perspective.  Together we will explore this series of essays by a variety of authors.  We’ll examine our own desires and challenge each other to find the abundant life through simpler living.  Come join us as we walk, slowly and lovingly, the road to a more meaningful life.
Discussion leaders:  Elaine Campbell, Devon Cortright
Dianne Jacobs, Carol Stewart, and Hans Wiegert

Weekday Classes/Groups
(Child care is available upon request for all groups)

Disciple Bible Study – Would you like to have a deeper understanding of the Bible? Have you wondered how the different stories of the Bible are connected to each other?  Would you like to see broad themes within the Bible?  Have you wondered how modern archaeology connects with biblical stories?  The weekly Disciple Bible study will address all of these questions.  This exciting overview of the Bible will require 20-30 minutes of daily homework, in preparation for the weekly video-based discussion lasting an hour and a half. We will cover the Old Testament over 8 weeks this fall, and then continue with 8 weeks on the New Testament in the spring.  This study will be offered at three different times in order to accommodate as many schedules as possible:

Leader:  Brian Norton   Sundays from 5:30 – 7 p.m.
Leader:  Tandy Taylor  Wednesdays from 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Leader:  Armin Meyer   Thursdays from 6:30 – 8 p.m.

Presbyterian Women Circle Bible Study
Some refer to us as a circle, some as a Bible study.  Perhaps we'll come up with a name for ourselves this year and stick with it.  Regardless, we plan to meet the second Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. at member's homes.   We will use the Horizons Bible study Above and Beyond:  Hearing God's Call in Jonah and Ruth, which challenges us to examine our own call and to explore what it means for our lifelong journey of faith.
Bible study leader:  Carol Irick

Eastminster Readers
This book discussion group meets every other month at 7:30 p.m. the Commons area at church.  The book for October is When the Emperor Was Divine, by Julie Otsuka, about a Japanese-American family in an internment camp in World War II.
Coordinator:  Robin Kennington

The Green Team
Last year’s small group “Stewards of God’s Creation” has now become the “Green Team,” and our goal this year is to embrace concrete actions that reduce human ecological impact on the earth and contribute to justice for people affected by environmental degradation. Our plans include a monthly meeting at EPC to discuss our action plan, and in addition, an occasional field trip or meeting elsewhere. Our group will also be a companion group to the Adult Sunday School class studying the book “Simpler Living Compassionate Life.”
Leader:  Carol Stewart

One Anothering Groups
Many passages in the New Testament instruct us on how to be Christians together:  “pray for one another”, “encourage one another”, “love one another”, and so on.  You are invited to participate in a small group who will seek to live out these “one anothering” passages, as you share your joys and burdens with each other, to give and receive support and friendship and care.  The groups will meet monthly at Eastminster for dinner and discussion on a Sunday evening, and then each group will schedule an additional meeting per month on your own.  If you would like to be in a group, please sign up on the kiosk or contact Armin Meyer (armino@gmail.com) or David Taylor (david@eastminster.com).
